Build the Peace Summer (BTPS)

BTPS was created as a prototype for a system-wide program after summer school and when school is out for the year. BTPS is designed to help children who are mandated to attend summer schools for reasons of low academic achievement. Based on this low achievement, these are the children who have a greater tendency to become prone to violence and crime. The summer program focuses on the North Lawndale area which is predominantly African-American and a neighborhood consisting of poverty conditions.

The core educational components of BTPS are designed for a school year but can and are adapted in detail to children’s ages, size of group and length of program. There are 7 main components: 1-Violence and Peace, 2-Racism and Equality, 3-Poverty and Well-Being, 4-Eyes Wide Open, Our Common Past, Present and Future, 5-Make a Minute for Peace, 6-Bilingual Education and 7-Other Programs such as: Substance Abuse, Police Awareness, Fire Prevention, and trips to the Library.
