VIOLENCE PREVENTION PEACE PROMOTION STRATEGY (VPPPS)

 For Your Information

Enclosed are several pages that describe select science based presentations and programs for schools and communities.  All presentations are lively and interactive, presented in Power Point, relying upon a large library of images and resources.  More than three hundred educational posters from sources worldwide, suitable for hallway, library or classroom display, are available to supplement presentations.

These presentations offer important insights into contemporary concerns such as violence prevention and peace promotion, preventing racism and promoting equality, preventing poverty and promoting well being, and the pursuit of juvenile and criminal justice.  These concerns are essential foundations to improve literacy and academic achievement.

Not included is information about programs such as the Family-School-Community Violence Prevention Strategy;  the School Success Strategy; the Build the Peace Summer Program;  Building Parent Bridges to Children-Teachers-Community; and a City Wide Build the Peace Program.

These are available for local application.

Technical Assistance Workshops, such as Select Essentials of Violence Prevention and Peace Promotion;  Breaking the Inter-Generational Transmission of Youth Violence and Poverty,  Doing Justice,  or Urban Security are also available.

INTRODUCTION TO MYTH:

Partners in Creation

Barry Weisberg

This workshop introduces participants to the origins and functions of myth worldwide.  A myth is simply an ancient story that offers an explanation for unexplainable events.  Myths often depict the origins of the universe, life and death.  This program will also introduce participants to the work of Jesse Reichek, a painter who was inspired by the world’s great myths to produce hundreds of paintings.  Participants will discuss:

What is Creation?  How do different peoples in different times and different regions of the world understand Creation?

What do you Create?  What would you like to Create?  Is all Creation a Partnership?  Why or Why Not?  What is Partnership?  Do you have Partners? What is your story?

The workshop can be adapted for children, youth and adults.

30-45-60-90 Minute Formats.  Handouts, CD’s  and Posters.

THE MYTH PAININGS OF JESSE REICHEK

Barry Weisberg

The workshops begins with an eighteen minute video introduction to the paintings of Jesse Reichek, who spent twelve years studying the world’s great myths of Creation, Mortality, Immortality and Death, producing nearly 800 paintings.  The workshop will then explore selected myths behind several paintings from all regions of the world.  The core of the workshop will be to encourage participants to discuss such questions as:  How do different peoples in different times and different regions of the world understand Creation?  Is all Creation a partnership?  What is Partnership?

The workshop is adapted for children, youth or adults.

 45-60-90 Minute Formats

Where possible the video presentation is offered on a high definition plasma screen to maximize the stunning components of the paintings.  Participants are provided a Resource Guide on the Myths of Creation.

An interactive CD data base on the myths is in preparation.

ME, YOU AND WE

From Heritage to History

Barry Weisberg

This presentation begins with students telling the class or assembly about themselves and the origins of their parents, grandparents or great grand parents.  Countries of origin are identified on a map.  The discussion then focuses on the history of the country,

geography, the language (s), food, cultures, religions, music and other issues of importance to students.

Because the instructor has visited nearly half of the countries of the world, he can talk first hand about

experiences in many countries. A United Nations poster containing 60 faces, representative of the people of the world, is utilized to focus discussion on both the common and distinct history of people worldwide.  Finally, students come to see that their heritage is a product of a common history.  They can understand how Me, connects to You and connects to We.

A rich variety of educational posters from around the world can be made available.

AMERICAN VIOLENCE:

The Seamless Web

Barry Weisberg, J.D.

This presentation reviews the historical challenges, conditions,

causes and choices regarding American Violence.  It utilizes the words

of the National Commission on the Causes of Violence (1969) as the

theme, “Violence has formed a seamless web with some of the noblest

and most constructive chapters in American history. We must

realize that violence has not been the action only of the

roughnecks and racists among us but has been the tactic

of the most upright and respected of people.”  This

presentation offers an overview of American history and

discusses the policies, programs and budgets required

to dramatically reduce and prevent violence at the family, school,

community, city, state and national levels.

Of Principles, Policies and Programs For

Families, Schools, Communities,

 Cities, Countries, Global

*Barry Weisberg, J.D.

This workshop  consists of 7 segments.  Each Power Point presentation will summarize the appropriate principles, policies and programs worldwide that can be utilized to Build the Peace.  The connecting theme is that we are all Partners in Creation.  The workshop will focus on values, attitudes, behaviors, institutions and systems of both violence and peace.  Performance indicators will be provided for families, schools, communities, cities, countries and global institutions, presenting an integrated view of inequality, poverty, injustice, crime, violence and environmental destruction.   The strategic goal is to break the inter-generational transmission of violence and build the peace at each critical level of daily life.  This will include building the peace with other people, other species and the environment.  Handouts will be available for each segment, together with a CD on the entire program.   This workshop will be interactive  and  prepare attendees to build the peace every day.  An important focus will be on children, youth, and violent communities worldwide.
